Welcome to the first weekly email from your Students’ Union for the new academic year.

 

What is the Students’ Union?

“The mission of the Union shall be to represent its members and promote, defend and vindicate the rights of its members at all levels of society.” – Constitution of the Students’ Union

The SU is a representative organisation that is independent from the University and consists of all registered students at NUI Galway.  As the SU is an independent body, the SU officers do not have to answer to the University authorities – we only answer to you, our members who have elected us.

Lockers On Sale this Monday 3rd September

You need to register at www.su.nuigalway.ie and pay online and collect your key from the SU Office 10am-5pm Monday-Friday. Please note if you’ve booked a locker in Áras Moyola or the Engineering Buildng you collect your key from the SU desk in the Engineering building 11am-3pm Monday-Friday.

Get your FREE SU Diary and handbook next week from the SU Office, the SU Engineering Desk and outside the SU Shop. We also have FREE Flirt FM Wall Planners for you.

SU Outdoor Cinema Monday 10th September

Our SU Outdoor Cinema is back (weather depending) at 8pm on Monday 10th of September outside the Engineering Building. There will be FREE popcorn for the first 100 people and you can vote on our Facebook page for the film you want us to show. Make sure you bring something to sit on and don’t bring any alcohol or you will be asked to leave.

 

Crisis Campout

We are holding a Crisis Campout in Eyre Square on Tuesday the 11th of September to call attention to the need for the Government to act on the National Accommodation crisis. We need affordable student purpose built accommodation in order to alleviate this crisis.

Remember we sell second-hand books to save you a bit of cash and we can also sell them on your behalf to make you some cash! Have a look at our second-hand bookshop for more information on buying or selling here.

 

SU Freshers’ Fair Tuesday 18th September

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Freshers’ Fair is back with ALL THE FREEBIES! Call down to Áras na Mac Léinn 11am-4pm Tuesday 18th of September for giant inflatable games, food, freebies, tunes and competitions.

 

NUIG Free STI Clinic

The free STI Clinic will reopen in the Student Health Unit in Áras na Mac Léinn from the week of the 10th of September. The clinic is by appointment only phone 091 492 604 to book. Remember you can pick up FREE condoms from the SU Office or the SU Engineering Desk all year long.

Your Student Transition Officer

Gráinne Morahan is the new Transition Officer who is available to support you, if you are a first year HEAR students, Access student and or if you entered directly with a QQI/ FET qualification. Gráinne is here to help ease you into University life assisting with social, personal, financial and academic experiences. You can meet with Gráinne any Tuesday morning during term, between 10.00 – 13.00 in Room G011, Ground Floor, Block E.  You can also ring to make an appointment on 091-493 298  or email transitionofficer@nuigalway.ie

Want to Join the Students’ Union Officer Team?

Applications open at 10am on Thursday 13th of September for the new SU Officer position of Ethnic Minorities Officer. Application forms will be available from the SU Office and SU Website and must be returned before 5pm on Wednesday 19th of September to the box in the SU Office. The election will take place on Thursday 27th of September.

 

SU Comedy Gig 8pm Monday 24th September €5

NUI Galway Students’ Union presents Alison Spittle and Kevin McGahern at 8pm on Monday 24th of September in the O’Flaherty Theatre. Tickets are €5 and are on sale now from the SU Office (Mon-Fri 10am-5pm) and the SU Engineering Desk (Mon-Fri 11am-3pm).

Develop core academic skills with NUI Galway’s Academic Skills Hub at www.nuigalway.ie/academic-skills. This online resource is packed with tips and information to ensure success in your studies. You can also drop into the Library’s Academic Skills Hub desk for one-to-one support.

 

Student Leap Cards now just €10

The shiny new Student Leap Cards are available now from the Students’ Union office upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday. All you need to do is bring yourself, your new college ID, €10 and a smile for the photo we will take of you. These are valid until the 31st of December 2019.

Class Representatives

Every class is entitled to a Class Representative to represent their class. If your class does not have a Class Rep your voice will not be heard. If you have any questions on the roles and responsibilities of a Class Rep contact the SU Vice-President/Education Officer Louis at su.education@nuigalway.ie. Financial Aid Fund opens 10th Sept

The Financial Aid Fund is intended to tackle disadvantage by providing financial support to students who require financial support to enable them to fully benefit from their third level studies. 

Semester 1 Financial Aid Fund Online Applications open on Monday 10th of September and close at 12 noon on Monday 1st OctoberMore information.

 

Sign Up For Your Free SU Card Today!

Get your free SU Card and earn points or free products every time you shop with us. Your SU Card can be used in any Students’ Unions outlet: Sult, Students’ Union Shop, Smokey’s Café, The Wall Café, Caifé na Gaeilge. Students’ Union outlets are open longer than other outlets, have the best prices and sell a huge range of products, so you will quickly start to earn benefits.

Also, when you spend money in SU outlets, that money stays on campus supporting student jobs and students’ union services. No other campus operator can say that!
