Notice of Referendum Thursday 1st February 2018

On Thursday 1st of February you will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether or not you support the restructuring of students’ union officer roles. The wording which will appear on the ballot paper requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

“Do you agreed with referendum motion proposed by the Executive Committee of the Students’ Union of the National University of Ireland Galway on 15th January 2018?”

The proposed amendment to the NUI Galway Students’ Union constitution, as proposed by the SU Executive Committee, if passed, will result in the following:

  • The Vice-President / Welfare Officer will become the Vice-President / Welfare and Equality Officer with added responsibilities in the area of equality.
  • The current part-time Equality Officer position will be abolished.
  • The current Postgraduate Officer will be abolished.
  • Five new part-time officer positions will be created:
  1. The International Students Officer
  2. The Gender and LGBT+ Rights Officer
  3. The Disability Rights Officer
  4. The Postgraduate Taught Officer
  5. The Postgraduate Research Officer

Polling will take place on Thursday 1st of February in the following venues and you must present your NUI Galway ID to vote:

  • 10am-5pm at Smokey’s Café
  • 11am-6pm in Áras na Mac Léinn
  • 10am-6pm via online Remote Vote on the SU Website. You must register in advance for the Remote Vote option by logging on to www.su.nuigalway.ie

This referendum has been requested by 500 members of the Students’ Union in accordance with the Students’ Union Constitution, Article 16.

 

Volunteers Urgently Needed for SU Charity Collection Day Sat 3rd Feb

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day on Saturday 3rd February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for Domestic Violence Response & AMACH! Please email studentsunion@nuigalway.ie if you can help out at any of the following times 11am-1pm, 1pm-3pm or 3pm -5pm.

SU Leadership and Elections Evening #NUIGSU18

At 6pm on Wednesday the 31st of January in  IT250 we are hosting an “SU Leadership and Elections Evening”. The event will see Padraic O’Maille , Ireland’s leading motivational speaker address the audience on Leadership and the discipline of success. Lorcán, the SU President, will then give information on the skills he has needed in his roles as a Class Rep, Part Time Officer and SU President. We will provide information on all upcoming election dates and follow up with a Q & A session, where questions can be put to Students’ Union officers about all things elections and leadership! The event will end with a social at Sult from 8pm! Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you all there!

We will have another Vintage Clothes Fair 11am-5pm Tuesday 30th of January in Áras na Mac Léinn. There’ll be loads of 80s+90s Vintage Fashion with the best trend led Street and Sportswear, Big Brands, Reworked and Accessories.

 

Bike Safety Day on Wednesday

NUI Galway Bike Safety Day is this Wednesday 31st of January. Look out for the volunteers giving out freebies to cyclists at campus entrances 8.30am-10am. Call to the SU Stand at Smokey’s 12pm-2pm to get free bike seat covers and free High Vis gear. We will also have bike lights on sale for just €2 each.

2018 Hardiman PhD Scholarships Scheme Application Deadline 5pm Friday 16th February

The Hardiman scholarships are fully funded for four years, with a stipend of €16,000 per annum,  plus your fees are paid for the 4 years. These Scholarships offer opportunities for suitably qualified individuals to pursue a Structured PhD focused on the five key areas of research in which the University offers leading expertise. SHAG Week Comedy Hypnotist Tickets on Sale

Following his sold out semester 1 gig we are delighted to announce that hilarious hypnotist Michael McCoy is back at 8pm on Monday 12th February in the O’Flaherty Theatre. NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day Tues 6th Feb in Áras na Mac Léinn

The event will run from 12noon to 3pm, with short presentations taking place during the day also, covering such topics as funding opportunities, applications, and research. SUSI (Grants Authority) will also be in attendance. There will be over 60 stands on display, so this is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Research Office, and other student support services. The Drugs.ie ‘Let’s Talk about Drugs’ National Media Awards Competition deadline is 9th April 2018. This year, we want students between 18 and 25 years of age to discuss Club Drugs and Performance and Image Enhancing Drugs (PIEDs). Winners in each category will receive a €250 One4All gift card and the overall winner will receive a prize of a €1,000 One4All gift card. Disclosure Training Course now Enrolling

We are running our disclosure training course with Galway Rape Crisis Centre again 10am-1.30pm Tues 13th Feb. This half day course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to deal appropriately with a disclosure of sexual violence, in settings where this is likely to occur. The course costs €10 which goes to Galway Rape Crisis Centre and you can sign up now in the SU Office or phone 091 524810.

Election of Postgrad Student to Údarás na hOllscoile

Oifig an Rúnaí will be running the annual election of a postgraduate student to Údarás na hOllscoile. Údarás na hOllscoile, the University’s governing authority, is responsible for managing and controlling all of the affairs of the University. The deadline for nominations is 12pm on Friday, 26th January.  Should there be more than one nomination, an election will be conducted by ballot on Tuesday, 30th January in the Concourse from 10am to 9pm.

Comediversity Gig Tonight

NUIG Comedy Society are holding their Comediversity gig at 7.30pm tonight in the Corrib Room at Sult. Tickets €5 students/€10 public. Employability Skills Event 6pm Mon 22nd Jan “Your Personal Impact….” it matters

Effective communication skills are valued by employers and are key to a graduate’s success and performance in the workplace. By attending this free event you will increase your chances of being successful at work by developing an awareness of how your communication impacts others, and learn techniques on how to enhance this.  Open to all students 6pm-7pm Monday 22nd of January in the O’Donoghue Theatre. For students taking part in the NUI Galway Employability Award, this workshop counts towards the skills development element of the Award.

 

“Prevention is better than cure”, a quantitative study exploring undergraduate university students’ knowledge, perceived importance and self-efficacy of cancer prevention behaviours.

The proposed study aims to explore knowledge of cancer prevention behaviours among undergraduate students and to identify perceived importance of cancer prevention. The research also aims to determine if undergraduate students are engaging in cancer prevention behaviours.

What You Need

Working & Travelling Abroad Fair Weds 24th Jan

The NUI Galway Working and Travelling Abroad Fair 2018 will help you to plan the best summer ever! The Fair will take place 12pm-3pm on Wednesday 24th January in Áras na Mac Léinn with talks 12pm-8pm. Exhibitors include: J1 Visa companies, travel companies, volunteering/adventure companies, internships/training companies and there will be delicious food stalls to fill your belly as you plan your summer!

Volunteers Needed for SU Charity Collection Day Sat 3rd Feb

We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for Domestic Violence Response & AMACH! March with NUI Galway Students’ Union against Direct Provision

NUI Galway Students’ Union invites you to march with us against the Direct Provision system currently operating in Galway and around the country. At 1pm on Saturday 20th of January we will assemble at the Eglinton Direct Provision Centre in Salthill and march to the Great Western Direct Provision Centre off Eyre Square. SU Charity Croagh Patrick Climb – Just 40 Spaces Available!
The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb takes place on Saturday 17th of February in conjunction with NUIG Mountaineering Club. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €40 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Domestic Violence Response & AMACH!

Would you like to be a part of our Students for Choice Taskforce? Applications are now open

This Taskforce will feed into the national Union of Students in Ireland (USI) Students for Choice Taskforce, and will campaign on and off campus for a Repeal of the 8th amendment. It will comprise of 8-12 members and will also have a separate group of volunteers.

NUI Galway Students’ Union has a mandate to be Pro Choice following referenda held by the Student body in 2013, and again in 2014.

Learn Sign Language

Our basic introductory course in Sign Language runs over 10 weeks with a 1 hour class each week and costs just €40. You can sign up in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm or call 091 524810 to register with credit card.

Flirt FM Galway’s only alternative and student radio station will be running free induction sessions for anyone interested in getting involved. Induction Sessions (duration: 60 min) will take place 6pm Monday 22nd of January and 7pm Monday 29th of January in the Large Acoustic Room, Áras na Mac Léinn.

 

ALIVE Welcome Workshops

All welcome along to the introduction to the ALIVE workshops. Includes: how to get started community volunteering in Galway; how to apply for the annual award from the President; and what to expect with volunteering. 5pm & 6pm Monday 22nd of January and repeated 5pm & 6pm Tuesday 23rd of January in the View upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn.

 

EIL Travel Scholarship for Community Engagement

ALIVE and the Mature Students Offices have teamed up to bring NUI Galway students a unique opportunity for a travel scholarship for summer 2018. Applicants should have extensive experience in volunteering and engaging with communities and be interested in learning from international community projects.

 

Want to Talk Science?

Applications are now open for the third annual Galway regional heat of the FameLab International “Talking Science” Competition which will take place in in An Taibhdhearc Theatre on Thursday the 1st of March. Competitors have three minutes to speak (without slides) to a general audience about any scientific topic. The top two contestants in the Galway heat will be invited to a weekend Science Communication Masterclass in Dublin on March 24th-25th, and will compete in the FameLab Ireland final on Thursday April 12th at the Science Gallery in Dublin. The winner will represent Ireland at the FameLab international finals at the Cheltenham Science Festival.
All members of the NUI Galway STEM community are invited to consider participating in the Galway heat and a training session will take place on Feb 7th, 6pm. The deadline for entering the competition is 16th of Feb.

Invitation to FREE Premiere Screening of Unrest

You are cordially invited to the free Galway premiere screening of the International award-winning film, Unrest, which will be taking place 5pm-7.30pm on Tuesday 16th January in the ILAS Auditorium, NUIG.  The film, which is about Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) is being screened as part of a worldwide awareness raising campaign, #TimeforUnrest. Refreshments will be offered before and after the screening.

Help Develop the New EU Youth Strategy

If you are aged between 15-30 years old and are interested in getting involved in making a positive change in Ireland and Europe sign up before Mon 22nd Jan to attend this meeting of young people to contribute thoughts and ideas to the new EU Youth Strategy.

There will also be an opportunity to apply and become one of the Irish delegation to the next EU Youth Conference in Bulgaria 16 – 19 April 2018.

 

Repeal the 8th IADTSU Taskforce Exhibition Open Call 2018

Open call for an exhibition of art related to and in support of the current Repeal the 8th campaign. Applicants must be in attendance of a USI institute. Works will be chosen by a panel. Works can be in any medium, paint, film, mixed media, sculpture, photography, performance, installation, writing, etc.

Student Multimedia Awards 2018

Are you interested in creating original, inspiring content encouraging students and staff to walk, cycle, use public transport or car share? Videos, posters, audio, installation or any other form of media are welcome. Closing date is 2nd March 2018

 

The University of Notre Dame has opened its annual competition for the Naughton Fellowships

The prestigious international fellowships provide funding for exceptional Ph.D., masters, or undergraduate students with an aptitude for the STEM disciplines to complete research or study at Notre Dame. Applications are due by Thursday, March 1, 2018
