NUI Galway Is On The March!

Join us to march for publicly funded education and investment in the grant on Wednesday the 4th of October in Dublin and don’t take no for an answer.

NUI Galway Students’ Union Encourages Students to use free STI Clinic

News & Events

NUI Galway Students’ Union Encourages Students to use free STI Clinic

NUI Galway Students’ Union is encouraging new and returning students to use the free, on campus, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Clinic in the NUI Galway Student Health Unit. The Students’ Union secured funding for the Clinic two years ago and the Clinic is available 5pm-7pm every Tuesday and Wednesday evening by appointment. The STI Clinic will have extended hours during the Union’s SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness & Guidance) Week campaigns.

The rates of STI’s in Ireland is still greatest among the under 25 age bracket. There are 25 different types of STI’s which include chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea and pubic lice. Many people with STI’s do not display symptoms which is why it is so important to get tested regularly if you are sexually active. STI’s can have long term complications such as infertility and can be passed on even when you don’t display any symptoms.

NUI Galway Students’ Union seeks to educate students about safe sex and prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections throughout the year by distributing free condoms and running their SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness & Guidance) Week campaigns.

Students’ Union President Lorcán Ó Maoileannaigh said: “It is vital that sexual health issues are not viewed as embarrassing and that all sexually active students are able to get tested regularly. We are delighted with the uptake at the free STI Clinic so far and encourage all NUI Galway students to use this great facility.”

1,250 New NUI Galway Students Added to Electoral Register

A Voter Registration Drive by NUI Galway Students’ Union has resulted in over 1,250 students being added to the register of electors. The campaign sought to target first year students during orientation events to get them signed up to vote.

The campaign was spearheaded by the Students’ Union Vice-President/Welfare Officer, Megan Reilly and the Vice-President/Education Officer Andrew Forde. They were assisted by volunteers including Alex Coughlan and Patricia O’Mahony in particular, who both worked tirelessly across campus to register students.

NUI Galway Students’ Union President Lorcán Ó Maoileannaigh said: “We are delighted to have registered so many students to vote thus far and we plan on registering many more throughout the year. With a referendum on the horizon and a possible general election soon, it is crucial that the student voice is heard. We want to encourage students to be active participants at all levels of society, and we know how important the student vote is, as was seen in the Marriage Equality referendum.”
