Welcome to your weekly email from your Students’ Union.

SU Elections #NUIGSU17

  • The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm this Monday 27th of February in IT250. Please note that only registered Class Reps can vote in this election.
  • Nominations are now closed for the 3 Full Time Paid SU Officer Positions of President, Vice President/Education Officer and Vice President/Welfare. The election takes place next Thursday 2nd of March with polling stations in An Bhialann (10am-7pm), Áras na Mac Léinn (11am-8pm), Engineering Building (12pm-4pm) and on the SU Website via Remote Vote 10am-8pm (pre-registration required before midnight Weds 1st March)
  • Nominations are now open for the 11 Voluntary SU Officer Positions of Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality, Societies, Clubs, Postgrad, Mature Students and the 5 College Convenors at and close at 5pm on Wednesday 1st of March. The election takes place on Thursday 9th of March.

#NUIGSU17 Remote Vote – Registration Open

If you are not on campus on Thursday 2nd March and wish to vote in the Students’ Union elections and referendum, you can use Remote Vote to cast your vote online.

It’s a simple two-step process:

  1. REGISTER Log on to the Students’ Union website before midnight on Wednesday 1st March and register for Remote Vote.
  2. VOTE Log on to the Students’ Union website between 10am and 8pm on Thursday 2nd March.

Remote Vote is easy to use and is completely confidential.

Referendum on NUI Galway Students’ Union’s position on reunification of the island of Ireland

On Thursday 2nd March you will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether or not the Students’ Union supports the reunification of the island of Ireland.

The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following proposition:

“That NUI Galway Students’ Union supports the reunification of the island of Ireland and calls on the State to hold a national referendum on the question of such reunification.”

This referendum has been requested by 500 members of the Students’ Union in accordance with the Students’ Union Constitution, Article 16.

Polling Stations will be open: 10am-7pm (An Bhialann), 11am-8pm (Áras na Mac Léinn), 12pm-4pm (Engineering Building), 10am-8pm (Online Remote Vote – registration required by midnight Weds 1st March)

3 Comedians for €5!

Our last SU Comedy Gig of the year is on at 8pm on Monday 6th of March and features Fred Cooke, Kevin McGahern AND Joanne McNally all for €5. Tickets are on sale now from the SU Office and the SU Engineering desk and all proceeds go to the SU charities: RNLI (Galway Lifeboats) and Threshold.

  2. Get into a team of 3 – 6 people

  4. a) Team captain choose a team name and set up your team online
  5. b) Then team members sign up online and join this team
  6. Get a step counter – last few FREE Step Counters available in SU Office or download an app (e.g. Free Smarter Travel Step Counter), use a fit bit, Ipod or other step tracking device
  7. From the 1st to 31st of March get walking where possible, aiming to increase your steps throughout the challenge reaching 10,000 steps or more by the 31st of March.

The Brain Café: NUI Galway’s Third Annual Undergraduate Research Conference 

On Tuesday the 4th of April, the Third Undergraduate Research Conference will take place in NUIG. This event is a brilliant opportunity for students to gain exposure to research in a friendly yet academic environment. Students will have the chance to present their own abstract ideas based on the Sustainable Development Goals! Digital Badges will also be awarded to anyone who presents or attends. CompSoc Camara Collection

CompSoc are running their monthly Camara Drop-off Point in 18 Distillery Road starting next Wednesday 1st March 2017 from 10am to 2pm. They are also looking for volunteers to help out for an hour between 10am and 2pm. All computers, laptops, monitors, servers and keyboard donations are welcome. They are then sent to Dublin to be wiped to military standards before being sent to schools in Africa. We are unable to accept printers, CRT monitors, switches or projectors.

Have your say on academic skills development at NUI Galway

Would you like to attend a student focus group about developing an academic skills hub to support the transition into and success at college? NUIG FLAC Society and Epilepsy Ireland are hosting a free public seminar dealing with discrimination in the workplace because of hidden disabilities at 6pm this Wednesday in AC202. If you have been discriminated against or are thinking about applying for a new job requiring the disclosure of medical information, this event will be of benefit to you.

 

Arts in Action presents In Illo Tempore’.

FREE event 1pm-2pm Thursday March 2nd in the Cube Theatre – Áras Na Mac Léinn. In Illo Tempore are a band of Fado  student singers from the Coimbra University in Portugal. Fado music originates from Lisbon and can be traced back to the 1820s. It has a long and rich heritage. Last year we answered 400,000 of these very calls from children who talked to us about abuse, neglect, loneliness and depression.

I am a final year Occupational Therapy student, as part of my final year research I am inviting NUIG students who have experienced a fall or fall-related injury whilst under the influence of alcohol to complete a questionnaire.  Anyone over the age 18 who has experienced a fall whilst under the influence of alcohol is invited to take part. SU Charity Comedy Gig: 3 Comedians for €5! 

We are delighted to announce that our last comedy gig this year features Fred Cooke, Kevin McGahern and Joanne McNally playing the O’Flaherty Theatre at 8pm on Monday 6th of March. Tickets are just €5 and all proceeds go to the SU Charities: RNLI (Galway Lifeboats) and Threshold.

Fred Cooke

Fred Cooke delivers a unique brand of comedy through his musical prowess and wild crafted physical story telling.

He has work on The Tommy Tiernan Show both on RTÉ and 2fm.

Fred became a regular on the highly successful RTÉ Show, The Fear. He has been seen preparing a choral sceptical surprise at a proposal in the Electric Picnic, embarrassing one of his fans at the Vodafone Comedy Festival, and proposing to an unexpected lady in Dublin City Centre.

His musical sketches are a constant hilarious success with his Republic of Telly Hidden Camera Prank reaching 1,661,213 hits on Youtube.

His collaboration on  Ireland the Musical brought him around every county in Ireland through music and surreal sketches. It now stands at over half a million views.

Fred has frequently been invited to perform at the largest and most successful festivals both here and abroad, including the Cat Laughs Comedy Festival, the Vodafone Comedy Carnival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Tampere Comedy Festival in Finland, London Irish Comedy Festival, Kells Hay Festival, Mayo Summer Festival, The Trim Satire Festival.

He has supported his comedy hero, Ardal O’Hanlon on his massive nationwide tour. He has also performed alongside such high profile acts as Tommy Tiernan, Eddie Izzard, John Bishop, Dara O Brian, Ross Noble, Kevin Bridges, Sarah Millican, Jason Byrne, Neil Delamere and Des Bishop.

Fred Cooke has rapidly become a unique stand-up delivering a style of comedy that simply cannot be imitated.

He made his debut on English television with the second series of the BBCShow  Vexed.

Fred has already contributed to a variety of successful Irish TV shows, both as a writer and performer, including RTE’s The Fear, Republic of Telly, The Savage Eye, The Cafe (as The Crazy Chef), Watch Your Language (The Mad Professor), The Modest Adventures of David O’Doherty, and The Liffey Laughs.

He has also regularly been the warm-up act for many different television chat shows including The Late Late Show, The Podge and Rodge Show, The Republic of Telly, The Craig Doyle Show.

He is also involved with the writing and production of the musical sell-out comedy: City West Side Story.

 

Kevin McGahern

 

Originally from Cavan, Kevin first began performing stand up in 2009 before joining the popular television series The Hardy Bucks on RTÉ 2 as Simcard. After featuring in a number of sketches on the show, Kevin took over as host of Republic of Telly, initially alongside Bernard O’Shea and Jennifer Maguire before flying solo in 2015.

 

As well as performing in the top Irish comedy clubs, in particular the International Bar in Dublin, he has performed in a number of festivals including Galway Comedy Carnival, Forbidden Fruit and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2013, he toured with his show 2 Grown Men alongside fellow comedian Edwin Sammon.

 

He presented the documentary Kevin McGahern’s Fast & Furious for RTÉ in 2015. His laid back style was praised for his open mindedness and sense of curiosity.

Kevin has featured in the films Flat Lake (2013) and Portrait of a Zombie(2012). He also co-wrote the play The Devil’s Céilí with Philip Doherty, which won Best Play at the All Ireland Drama Festival in 2014.

 

Joanne McNally

 

Joanne McNally, Ireland’s fastest rising comedy star, recently finished a national tour of her show Separated at Birth which she co-wrote with PJ Gallagher and in less than a year in the business, became the new co-host of RTE’s Republic Of Telly and also sold out her first solo stand up show. In 2016, Joanne performed Bite Me at the Dublin Fringe Festival, which was nominated for a number of Fringe Awards including Best Performer.

 

Joanne has numerous TV credits to her name including The Late Late ShowThe Seven O’Clock ShowThe Afternoon ShowTotes 2014Panti Does 2015Ireland AMTwo Tube and The Commute for RTÉ.

 

She is a regular on the airwaves with a weekly agony aunt slot on 2FM’s The Chris and Ciara Show and has also been heard on RTÉ’s Ryan Tubridy Show, Today FM’s Alison Curtis Show, Spin 1038.com’s Spin Talk, 98FM’s Ray Foley Show and 4FM’s Saturday Show.

She regularly performs in comedy clubs around Ireland as well as at many of the major festivals including Kilkenny Cat Laughs, the Vodafone Comedy Festival and Body & Soul.

Joanne is also a freelance writer and has written for the Irish Independent’s Insider Magazine, U Mag, BASH Magazine and The Sunday Times.

Reminder: Consumption of Alcohol in Public Places

The new Galway Bye-laws on consumption of alcohol in public places means that the Gardaí can issue a €100 on the spot fine if they catch you drinking in the streets.
This goes up to €200 if not paid within 21 days and if you don’t pay in 56 days you can end up in court facing a charge of €1,500. Don’t take the risk.

Iarnród Éireann and NUIG ID Cards

Remember because there are no expiry dates on NUI Galway ID cards Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail will only accept NUIG ID as proof of being a student 4 years from issue date i.e. if your ID starts with 14 (issued 2014) they will stop accepting it in 2018.

This is not great if you are doing a long course, took a year out or are back studying after break etc. BUT we are talking to the University about getting expiration dates on the ID cards again!

In the meantime we sell the Student Leap Card for €10 in the SU. They will take that as proof of your “studenthood”

Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to deal appropriately with a disclosure of sexual violence. 5 CPD points per training – these are through the Irish Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy.
  2. Smart Consent Workshop 12pm-2pm Thursday 9th of February. FREE Course. Limited Spaces. A workshop where students explore what consent means in a fun environment. You are never asked about your own sexual history or experiences. Facilitators use their research findings to present scenarios and involve you in activities, to raise your awareness of what consent means to you.
  3. Occupational First Aid 3 day course 9am-5pm Friday 10th, 17th and 24th of February. €100 (usual cost €160) FETAC Level 5 course.

  • Nominations open for the 3 Full Time Paid SU Officer Positions of President, Vice President/Education Officer and Vice President/Welfare Officer at 10am on Thursday 16th of February and close at 5pm on Wednesday 22nd of February. The election takes place on Thursday 2nd of March.
  • Nominations open for the 11 Voluntary SU Officer Positions of Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality, Societies, Clubs, Postgrad, Mature Students and the 5 College Convenors at 10am on Thursday 23rd of March and close at 5pm on Wednesday 1st of March. The election takes place on Thursday 9th of March.

Stock School Book Launch

On Wednesday, February 8th final year B. Comm student Jason Walsh launches his first book, ‘Stock School, A Colour Coded Guide To Financial Trading & Investing.’ The launch takes place in the library lobby at 4pm. The book, goes into greater detail than is covered in the Stock School lectures, which Jason has been teaching in NUIG since September 2015 as part of the Entrepreneurship Society events. The book launch is followed at 6pm with a trading workshop in AC 201 hosted by Dublin trading firm Positive Equity. There will be catering at both events and all students are welcome to attend either or both events. More information.

 

FREE Cloakroom open TOMORROW

The SU FREE Cloakroom will be open on Fridays 9am-5pm during term time. The service is still free but will only be one day per week. Items must be removed at 5pm and we can’t take laptops. The SU Cloakroom is located in the library basement beside the Students’ Union XL Shop.

 

NUI Galway Postgrad Ball Thursday 9th of March Salthill Hotel

There will be a Champagne and sweets reception, followed by a 4 course meal on the night. Entertainment will be provided by Top of the Popz and DJ afterwards. It’s going to be a fantastic night! Exam Results

SUMS FREE Maths Support

SUMS offers FREE mathematics support to students across all colleges and courses as well as to students engaged in Access/Foundation courses.

 

NUIG Free STI Clinic – BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

Please note that you must make an appointment in person in the Student Health Unit or by phoning 091 492604 before attending. The STI Clinic runs 5pm-7pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays during term.
