NUI Galway Students’ Union Wins at National Student Achievement Awards

News & Events

NUI Galway Students’ Union won two prizes at the National Student Achievement Awards which took place in Dublin Castle last night. The EXPLORE Programme won first prize in the Community Awareness Award category and the CÉIM programme took top honours in the Student Engagement Activity of the Year Award.

The EXPLORE innovation initiative supports NUI Galway students and staff to collaborate as equal partners to bring about positive change on campus and in the wider community. It was initiated by NUI Galway Students’ Union and NUI Galway in early 2012 and has seed funded over 100 new projects involving more than 600 students and staff. These projects have gone on to raise over €285,000 funding to date.

CÉIM is an academic peer learning programme which NUI Galway Students’ Union established in 2013. The aim of the programme is to support 1st year students to transition successfully to university, to succeed academically, and to develop networks and complete their studies. The programme was first piloted with NUI Galway College of Engineering and Informatics in 2013 and introduced in the College of Arts, Social Sciences & Celtic Studies in 2015. It will be offered to 20 percent of 1st year students in the next academic year.

The impact to date of the CÉIM programme is very encouraging with 80% of 1st years surveyed in 2014/15 saying it helped them settle into university. Regular CÉIM attendees achieved 9% higher grades in 2014/15 than irregular or non-attendees and were much more likely to pass the year. The Student Engagement Activity of the Year Award was awarded by CEO of the Higher Education Authority, Tom Boland.

Mr. Boland noted that “CÉIM is innovative and invigorating and shows a depth of work and understanding worthy of any project in higher education.”

The Student Achievement Awards took place in Dublin Castle last night. The Awards recognise the contribution of individuals and groups from third level education institutions across the island of Ireland.

Students’ Union President Phelim Kelly said: “NUI Galway Students’ Union is delighted to be recognised for its work in the areas of Community Awareness and Student Engagement. As a Students’ Union, everything we do is student centred and we endeavour to ensure that our members are equipped with the skills to achieve their full potential in University, and to be in a position to participate in, and contribute to, their community”

“CÉIM has been a hugely successful programme and has been an enormous benefit to students in NUI Galway. We look forward to making it available to more students in the coming years”

“EXPLORE has proven itself to be a dynamic model for enabling innovation. It has brought NUI Galway students and staff together to work on hundreds of projects that have benefitted the entire community and we look forward to watching its progress”

SU Weekly Email 31 21st of April 2016

Weekly Email

Welcome to your weekly email from your Students’ Union.

Here’s our top 10 tips for the exams next week

1. Check, double check and triple check your timetable NOW! Every year we have students who read their timetable wrong and end up missing an exam – don’t be that guy!
2. Find your College ID and bring it with you to every exam. If you have lost it call to NUIG – Student Information Desk to get a new one for €20. You will be fined €30 if you don’t have your ID with you.
3. Plan how you are getting to the exams NOW and set all your alarms. And your housemates alarms. You need to be there 20 minutes prior to the start of the examination so that’s: 09:10 for a 09:30 exam, 12:40 for a 13:00 exam and 16:10 for a 16:30 exam.
4. Leave your phone at home – it’s a €20 fine for bringing your phone to the exam AND other penalties can include mark reduction and getting zero marks for the module.
5. WASH! If you even have your shopping list written on your hand scrub it off. If you have any writing on your body, no matter how unrelated to the exam, you’ll fail the exam and have to repeat.
6. Follow the directions of the Exam Invigilators at all times.
7. If you need advice on deferring your exams please contact the SU Education Officer, Rebecca Melvin or your College Office.
8. You can’t bring in pencil cases, glasses cases or calculator covers to the exam.
9. You can’t leave the Exam Venue for the first hour or the last 30 mins of the exam
10. Relax – you got this!

NUI Galway Student Leaders Celebrated

News & Events

NUI Galway Students’ Union and NUI Galway celebrated 41 CÉIM peer learning student leaders on Wednesday, 12 April.

The CÉIM peer learning programme was initiated by NUI Galway Students’ Union to help 1st year students transition successfully to university, succeed academically and complete their studies. The programme was first piloted in 2013 in collaboration with NUI Galway College of Engineering and Informatics and with the School of Law in 2015. Due to its success to date, the programme will be rolled out further in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies in 2016/17.

CÉIM is based on the well-evidenced Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) model used in over 30 countries. Student leaders from higher years facilitate weekly study sessions for small groups of 1st years, creating peer-led learning communities where it’s easy to ask questions.

The 41 students who acted as CÉIM leaders in 2015/16 are studying Engineering and Law, and they have each volunteered 40-60 hours since September 2015 to assist 1st years.

According to NUI Galway Students’ Union President, Phelim Kelly, “Peer learning is not an activity that is traditionally associated with Students’ Unions. We’re delighted to be leading the way in this regard in Ireland. CÉIM is proof that there is a lot to be gained by students’ unions, university staff and higher year students partnering to support 1st years as they transition to university.”

Green Sod Ireland presents: “We’re off to Mars – How will planet Earth survive?”

6.30pm-8pm Thursday 21stApril in The View, Áras na Mac Léinn, NUI Galway.

Mars is no place for the faint-hearted but it’s where we’ll have to go if we don’t wake up to the fact that Earth’s ecosystems, which give us fresh air, clean water, and life itself, are under serious threat from our modern lifestyle. Despite what some would have us believe – climate change is REAL and demands a response from us. We must act now if we are to survive!

On Thursday 21st April Green Sod Ireland, a Galway based environmental organisation, will host an interactive workshop: What can we do…besides running away to Mars…? Light refreshments provided on arrival.
