Christmas Exam Buses Monday 2nd December – Monday 16th December 2013

NUI Galway Students’ Union in partnership with City Direct Bus has organised a Christmas Exam Bus service from NUI Galway to the Salthill Exam Venues of Leisureland and the Galway Bay Hotel. Buses will leave University Road bus stop 30 minutes before the exam starts and will provide a non-stop service to Leisureland. Return buses will leave from Leisureland 10 minutes after the exam finishes and drop students back to University Road. 

Cost: €2 per journey.

SU Enterprise Awards 2014 €23,000 Prize Fund

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards aim to unlock the potential of the students of NUI Galway to invest in their own futures today. 
If you have an idea for a new business or a social enterprise then this can be the competition that can allow you to realise your goal. Students are invited to sketch out the initial proposals for their project or business and to draw up the plans they hope will make their idea a reality. The finalists will be given the chance to take their ideas forward and to set about implementing their projects with the assistance of a financial allowance, workshops and clinics.
The overall winner will receive a direct investment of €10,000 in their project to really help get it off the ground in addition to further guidance and mentoring to help bring the project forward, while two runners up prizes, each valued at €5,000 will also be awarded. The six final projects going through to the second stage of the competition will each receive a €500 bursary.

Closing Date for Submissions is 5pm Friday 17th January 2014. More information, submission template and competition rules are available here.

Exams & ID Cards

Make sure you bring your ID card with you and place it on your desk during your exam for inspection. If you do not present your current ID card you will be fined €30. If you have misplaced or lost your ID card, you can get it replaced at the Student Information Desk, Áras Uí Chathail for a fee of €30. During the Exam period the Student Information Desk will be open 09:00-12:30 and 14:00-16:00 Monday to Friday.

No Mobile Phones in Exams

Mobile phones will not be tolerated inside exam halls during exams. The best option is to leave it at home before you come in for your exam. If it is left with your belongings outside of the exam hall the University holds no responsibility for items stolen. Students found to have mobile phones in the exam will have them confiscated and be fined €20. More information on exam rules and regulations is available here.

Operation Santa – Christmas Toy Appeal
You are invited to contribute to this year’s Christmas Toy Appeal. If you have any unused toys please drop them off at the Students’ Union office, upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn. They will be donated to St Vincent de Paul’s ‘Operation Santa’, which assists Irish families struggling this Christmas. The deadline for donation is Monday, 9 December.

The NUI Galway Students’ Union 2014 Naked Calendar is on sale across campus now. 63 brave NUI Galway students revealed all for the calendar and you can get an eyeful for only €5! Calendars are on sale from the Students’ Union Office, the SU Shop, the SocsBox, the Hub, Smokey’s and the SU desk in the Engineering Building. All proceeds go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC/Childline.

Learn Sign Language in 2014

10 Week Basic Sign Language Course just €40 for NUI Galway students. Course A: Tuesday 28th January – Tuesday 1st April 12pm-1pm. Course B: Tuesday 28th January – Tuesday 1st April 1pm-2pm. Course C: Wednesday 29th January – Wednesday 2nd April 6pm-7pm. Sign up now in the SU Office.

World AIDS Day This Sunday

Annual World AIDS Day Candlelit Memorial Service in St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church at 8.00 pm on Sunday 1st December.

Google is delighted to announce the launch of three opportunities for students:

  • Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. Female Bachelor, Master and PhD students studying Computer Science and related fields in the 2014-2015 academic year can apply to win a €7,000 scholarship.   • Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities. The 6th series of RTÉ’s Dragons’ Den begins in the new year. This series will include a new strand aimed specifically at entrepreneurs in the third level sector. The show is offering campus companies, 3rd level start-ups and students the opportunity to pitch their business idea to the Dragons. If you have a lucrative business idea or are already operating successfully and looking to expand, and could use the financial backing then this is the show for you. SU Enterprise Awards 2014 €23,000 Prize Fund

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards aim to unlock the potential of the students of NUI Galway to invest in their own futures today. 
If you have an idea for a new business or a social enterprise then this can be the competition that can allow you to realise your goal. Students are invited to sketch out the initial proposals for their project or business and to draw up the plans they hope will make their idea a reality. The finalists will be given the chance to take their ideas forward and to set about implementing their projects with the assistance of a financial allowance, workshops and clinics.
The overall winner will receive a direct investment of €10,000 in their project to really help get it off the ground in addition to further guidance and mentoring to help bring the project forward, while two runners up prizes, each valued at €5,000 will also be awarded. The six final projects going through to the second stage of the competition will each receive a €500 bursary.

Closing Date for Submissions is 5pm Friday 17th January 2014. More information, submission template and competition rules are available here.

24 Hour Reading Room 25 Nov-13 Dec

The reading room will be open 24 hours a day from Monday 25th November to Friday 13th December. Remember you need to have your ID Card registered with the Security Office to gain access. Students who will be making use of the 24 hour reading room facility are reminded not to leave items unattended as items can and have be stolen.

Spin Bikes

Unfortunately Grand Scheme Bike Share Ltd who ran the Spin Bikes Scheme on Campus filed for liquidation on Friday. The bikes are off hire until the University finds a temporary arrangement or a permanent re-arrangement.

White Collar Fight Night TONIGHT

The NUI Galway Students’ Union White Collar Fight Night is back TONIGHT in the Bailey Allen Hall. The event is in aid of the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC/Childline. Doors 7pm, first fight 7.45pm. Tickets on sale in the SU office NOWor on the door: €12 for adults, €7.50 for students, under 18’s & OAPs. Children under 12 go free.

Christmas Day Thursday 21st November – Santa needs helpers!

NUI Galway Students’ Union Christmas Day comes early again this year. We are holding a massive Christmas Day fundraiser in the College Bar on Thursday 21st of November to raise money for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC/Childline. There will be a traditional Christmas dinner, carols, cheesy Christmas tunes with DJ Byrno and lots of prizes for the best/worst Christmas jumpers along with a whole lot of other Festive merriment. Get your tinsel, mistletoe and jumper ready now! 

Santa also needs some helper volunteers to assist with the fundraising on the day so if you have an hour or two to spare between 11am and 6pm on Thursday 21st December email studentsunion@nuigalway.ieto sign up and you will definitely be on Santa’s nice list this year.

 

Postgrad-Aoke Returns this Friday

Our Postgrad Karaoke nights are back due to popular demand. The first Postgrad-Aoke night will be in the College Bar this Friday 15th November from 7.30pm with Giant Games, pizza deals and of course Karaoke! All performers will be rewarded for their efforts so get practising.

Bus to Youth Assembly in Dublin this Saturday

NUI Galway Students’ Union will be supporting the “We’re not Leaving” campaign and encouraging all students to attend the Youth Assembly in Dublin on Saturday the 9th of November. The Union is providing a return bus to the assembly and tickets are on sale for €2 from the Students’ Union office now. We will be leaving at 9am on Saturday.

Aims of the assembly:
– To build a campaign that unites students, young workers and the unemployed to address the youth crisis.
– To produce a youth charter, which articulates demands to be placed on representative bodies, the state and society – and which articulates a divergent social vision from the path of austerity Ireland on behalf of young people.
– To build a democratic infrastructure on the basis of this charter that can reinvigorate youth politics locally and nationally.

Bodywhys Eating Disorder Survey

You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Bodywhys which looks at young adults’ knowledge about the various categories of eating disorders and their impressions of individuals with eating disorders. The Opening Hours for the Library Reading Room are now 07.00 – 02.30 7 Days per Week

Bus Éireann Tickets on sale in SU

We now sell Bus Éireann tickets for all routes including Galway city service monthly and weekly tickets in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. We can also stamp loyalty cards when you buy your ticket here.

ISIC Cards now on sale in SU

We are now selling ISIC Cards in the Students’ Union office. The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is the only globally recognised student ID with 41,000 benefits in 126,000 locations. The card costs just €15 and lasts until December 2014. We take your photo and print it off straight away Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. http://www.isiccard.ie/about/

NUI Galway SU Supports “We’re Not Leaving” Campaign

NUI Galway Students’ Union is supporting the We’re Not Leaving – Galway campaign and encouraging all students to attend the Youth Assembly in Dublin on Saturday the 9th of November. We are providing a return bus to the assembly and tickets are on sale for €2 from the Students’ Union now. We will be leaving at 9am on Saturday. 

Aims of the assembly:

– To build a campaign that unites students, young workers and the unemployed to address the youth crisis.

– To produce a youth charter, which articulates demands to be placed on representative bodies, the state and society and which articulates a divergent social vision from the path of austerity Ireland on behalf of young people.

– To build a democratic infrastructure on the basis of this charter that can reinvigorate youth politics locally and nationally.

You can also attend the Galway meeting this Thursday 7th November 2013 at 8pm in the Victoria Hotel.

Naked Calendar on Sale Monday Afternoon

The NUI Galway Students’ Union 2014 Naked Calendar goes on sale this Monday 4th November at 3pm. 63 brave NUI Galway students revealed all for the calendar and you can get an eyeful for only €5! Calendars will be on sale from the Students’ Union Office, the SU Shop, the SocsBox, our desk at Smokey’s and the SU desk in the Engineering Building (11am-3pm Monday-Friday). All proceeds go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC/Childline.

Our next comedy gig is Republic of Telly star Bernard O’Shea and Support on Monday 11th November at 8pm in the O’Flaherty Theatre. Tickets are on sale now for just €5 in the SU Office and at the SU desk in the Engineering Building (11am-3pm Monday-Friday).

White Collar Fight Night 14th November

The NUI Galway Students’ Union White Collar Fight Night is back on Thursday 14th November in the Bailey Allen Hall. The event is in aid of the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC/Childline. Doors 7pm, first fight 7.45pm. Tickets on sale in the SU office Monday 4th November: €12 for adults, €7.50 for students, under 18’s & OAPs. Children under 12 go free.

Let’s Talk Wednesday 6th November

The Students’ Union and their Welfare Crew, in conjunction with four Commerce students, will be running a ‘Let’s Talk’ campaign on campus on Wednesday 6th November, to encourage people to talk about their problems, issues or concerns. We will be giving out free goodie bags so keep an eye out for the bright green t-shirts! Connacht vs Glasgow Tickets

We now have €10 NUI Galway Student tickets on sale for the next Connacht Rugby home game on Saturday 2nd November at 5pm against Glasgow at the Sportsground.  

Hardiman Research Scholarships

NUI Galway is offering Hardiman Research Scholarships for Structured PhD programmes. These scholarships are fully-funded four-year PhD scholarships. ISIC Cards now on sale in SU

We are now selling ISIC Cards in the Students’ Union office. The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is the only globally recognised student ID with 41,000 benefits in 126,000 locations. Focus group discussion on Ireland’s International Education Strategy

ICOS and USI invite you to participate in a focus group discussion on Ireland’s International Education Strategy to be held on Wednesday November 6th in Aras na Mac Leinn, Meeting Room 2 from 5pm until 7pm

Ireland’s 2010 strategy, “Investing in Global Relationships”, set out a vision that Ireland would “offer a high-quality education, strong integration with domestic students, and an unparalleled experience that adds significant value to the career outcomes of all who are educated here.” The views of students both Irish and international are particularly important when considering some of the questions that now need to be addressed. White Collar Fight Night 14th November

Let’s get ready to rumble!
Our fighters have trained hard, and are looking good in sparring. And on November 14th, we are going to put on one hell of a show, in aid of Childline & Galway Rape Crisis Centre.
